A. Student Learning, Assessment, and Satisfactory Progress
The broad philosophy at AC/C TECH is to provide practical and focused training that will benefit students and the communities they serve. Again, that’s our motto! We offer web-based training programs designed to take the guess work out of maintaining an apartment community and repairing equipment; however small, large, or unique. Students have an option of pursuing  Courses only,  Employer Specific Training, Technical Certificate program, or  Associate of Applied Science Degree in Residential & Apartment Technology. Graduates will have developed skills, as listed in the program objectives for that particular trade, and, may become a specialist for acquiring that knowledge, skills and competencies. More importantly, graduates will understand the role of maintenance technicians for that trade, be able to interpret vocational and technical materials for that trade, know governmental regulations for that trade, properly use tools for that trade, and become proficient at completing job assignments for that trade.
Classes are designed so that students can learn on a step-by-step basis and progress at their own pace; the curriculum for each course involves:
- Online instructions and reading assignments
- Viewing online lessons
- Analyzing reference materials on various websites
- Taking quizzes and final examinations via the internet
- Repeating lessons and/or quizzes to improve scores
- Participating in web-based meetings
- Documenting OJT (On-Job-Training) or externship assignments
- Completing a mandatory student verification assignment
All training materials align with equipment manuals, governmental regulations, and technological advancements. Building code books are updated every three years, and likewise, AC/C TECH will update training materials. More importantly, all training materials match the activities a maintenance technician will experience on the job. As examples, there are assignments related to identifying components, interpreting wiring diagrams, using a volt-ohm meter, diagnosing failures & making repairs, adjusting the equipment for optimum efficiency, doing planned maintenance activities, and documenting work orders. Pursuant to the Standards of Accreditation, all training materials align with the program objectives, the occupational area of study, and the level of educational intent. This will assure relevant training.
AC/C TECH has developed a test bank that offers comprehensive assessments. The test bank contains questions that a maintenance technician will experience on the job. Some questions require a step-by-step approach towards answering, some questions require detailed thought, some questions require analyzing a cause-and-effect (chain reaction), and some questions require just a simple response. During testing, the test bank will randomly pick questions, shuffle answers, upload diagrams or photos next to a question, and permit different type questions. In fact, there are multiple choice, true/false, fill-in-the-blank, short answer, matching, hot spot, sequence, and rating scale questions. These features make our assessments meaningful and highly comprehensive.

The instructional staff will monitor the students’ progress routinely, engage the student in a one-on-one conversation during web-based meetings, provide counseling and tutoring as needed, and computerize all results. The students overall performance will be determined by completing lessons, labs, quizzes, a final examination, OJT or externship evaluations. As the minimum passing range, students are required to demonstrate a proficiency in 70% of the course activities.
It’s worthy to mention that some Property Management Firms maintain that a 70% passing standard is low; however, a 70% passing standard is required by applicants to earn a professional license in residential building trades; e.g.: plumbing, electrical, and HVAC. This is a national standard. Also, a 70% passing standard is required to earn an EPA Technician Certification; and, a 70% passing standard is required for home inspection and auditor training. Simply stated, it would be in the best interest of AC/C TECH to align passing standards with industry standards. As a method of satisfying firms desiring a higher standard, AC/C TECH gives students an option to redo training materials until a 90% passing standard is achieved at no additional cost and for personal development. From a different perspective, AC/C TECH shows performance indicators on transcripts rather than grades, and those indicators may align more closely with their beliefs:
100 - 95% Superior
94 - 88% Good
87 - 80% Average
79 - 70% Passing
Course credits are earned by  completing a mandatory verification assignment, and  demonstrating a proficiency in 70% of the course activities. Note: A successful program completion is based upon meeting all course requirements listed under the program objectives and will be confirmed by an appropriate credential (e.g., Job Certification, Technical Certificate, or AAS Degree).
Student Verification Policy
Prior to earning course credits, students are required to complete a mandatory 1-hour verification assignment. Instructors will verify the identity of students to assure that they are indeed the person who completed the training. Acceptable forms of identification are drivers' license, governmental identification card, passport, and military identification. In addition to showing verification, the mandatory 1-hour verification assignment is to verify that he/she has developed the skills necessary to complete work assignments expected of a maintenance technician. The 1-hour verification assignment may include diagnosing and repairing a defective component, cleaning the equipment, adjusting the system for optimum efficiency, and/or answering routine maintenance questions.
Credential Award Policy
Students are required to pass all courses as listed in the program objectives to earn a Technical Certificate, Job Certification, or AAS Degree. The minimum passing standard is 70%. An average score of 70%, derived from all courses, does not fulfill that requirement. Again, students are required to pass all courses listed in that program to earn a credential.
Students have an option to repeat lesson and lab assignments 5 times to improve scores. All assignments must be submitted before the course ends. If an assignment is not submitted, the student will be given a zero (0) score for that particular lesson.
Quizzes are assigned at the end of each training lesson. Students have an option to repeat quizzes 5 times to improve scores. A final examination is assigned at the end of all training lessons. Final examinations cannot be repeated. All test must be completed before the course ends, otherwise, the student will be given a zero (0) score for each test not completed.
OJT or Externship Evaluation Policy
This program is unique in that it allows students to pursue online training followed by actual work assignments. Students will complete four hours of maintenance training lessons, then go to a job site and work four hours. As much as possible, the work assignments will parallel the lessons. As one example, as students learn about electric furnace maintenance, they could assist in repairing or cleaning HVAC equipment. As another example, as students learn about interior building maintenance, they could assist in prepping a unit for leasing. Note: The students work experience will be scrutinized. A maintenance supervisor will be asked to evaluate the students’ progress and report outcomes to AC/C TECH. The evaluation may stem from a list of areas; e.g.:
- Work Orders - Students may be evaluated on how effectively they completed the assignments; e.g.: did the student understand and respond to the work order correctly, did the student demonstrate good diagnosing and repair techniques, did the student adjust the equipment for optimum efficiency after making a repair, was the work completed in a timely manner, etc.
- Special Projects - Students may be evaluated on how well they completed a special project.
- Safety Skills - Students may be evaluated on safety procedures, use of tools and testing devices, maintaining a clean and safe work environment, protecting the resident and/or property, etc. Note: A student will be stopped and receive zero score if he/she makes a Gross Safety Violation. A Gross Safety Violation is anything that the student does or fails to do that significantly jeopardizes his/her safety or the resident’s safety.
- Technical Skills - Students may be evaluated on their technical skills; for example: time needed to correctly diagnose and repair a failure, knowledge of the unit's sequence of operation, demonstration of a systematic process for isolating electro-mechanical problems, use of reference materials, the student's process toward diagnosing failures, and proving diagnosis.
- Customer Relation Skills - Students may be evaluated on professionalism; for example: how an introduction was made, did the student interact with the resident, was customer satisfaction achieved at the end of the service call, etc.
- Documentation Skills - Students may be evaluated on how thorough, accurate, and legible work- order forms were completed; what was observed, diagnosed and repaired; and listing what the customer was told.
Academic Dishonesty Policy
Academic dishonesty, including plagiarism and cheating, will result in the loss of credit for that assignment and/or course.
Student Disabilities Policy
If a student has a disability, which may affect learning via the internet, the instructor should be notified as soon as possible. AC/C TECH will provide reasonable accommodations to remove all barriers that prevent such learning. Disabled students requesting academic assistance may be requested to provide documentation of the disability and the extent of support services necessary.
Course Withdrawal Policy
Students are allowed to drop courses up to the fifth class session. Courses dropped before the deadline will not appear on the student's transcript. Courses dropped after the deadline will appear on the student's transcript as a "W" representing withdrawal. Approvals for withdrawals are not required; however, it is strongly recommended that students consult the Director of Student Services prior to withdrawing from a course. In addition, students should be aware of the possible consequences of reducing their course load as it could affect financial aid. Failure to maintain the requirements of a fulltime student may affect Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) and receipt of certain federal, state and other benefits, including but not limited to Veterans benefits or social service benefits.
Academic Probation and Suspension Policy
Again, the instructional staff will monitor the students’ progress routinely, and when a student is identified as a slow learner or not progressing, he/she may be given additional time to complete assignments. The slow learner may also be given special assistance such as having materials and/or examinations read, or being assigned to work with someone more experienced. If deficiencies continue, he/she may be given private counseling or tutoring. If a student fails a course, he/she will be allowed to retake the course at no additional charge. Should a student fail the same course twice, he/she will be placed on academic probation. Should there be a third consecutive failure, that student will be suspended from the program for a period of not less than one year.
Non-Academic Suspension Policy
Non-academic suspensions can stem from absenteeism, poor behavior, plagiarism, or drug or theft related problems. At the time of enrollment, students are required to review and sign an Attendance Policy, Student Behavior Policy, and Drug and Smoking Policy. A violation of these policies will result in disciplinary action that could range from counseling to getting suspended. However, when an incident occurs, AC/C TECH will document the situation and warn the student that if it reoccurs, he/she will be suspended from the program for a period of not less than one year.
Suspension Reinstatement Policy
After getting suspended reinstatement is not automatic; the student must apply in writing and his/her documentation shall include a plan to correct all deficiencies. The President will establish a Committee to review the students’ document and for making recommendations. The committee will consist of five individuals: one Student, one Graduate, one Advisory Committee Member, one Faculty Member, and one Administrator. The President will review the recommendation(s) and make a final ruling.
Permanent Suspension Policy
Should a student get reinstated, and subsequently violates another policy that leads to a second one year suspension, he/she will be permanently suspended from the institution.
B. Student Achievement
Pursuant to the Standards of Accreditation, AC/C TECH has demonstrated successful student achievement by documenting that students are acquiring the knowledge, skills, and competencies intended by the program objectives. Also, AC/C TECH has demonstrated successful student achievement by maintaining acceptable rates of student graduation and employment.
